Ratings and Reviews

What DataHawk collects about product ratings on Amazon and Walmart, where to find it, how to read the star-rating breakdown, and its limits.

Ratings are one of the first things shoppers check before they buy, and a sudden wave of 1-star ratings often signals a product or listing problem. DataHawk follows the ratings of your products and your competitors' every day. You see the trend, and you can get alerted when something changes.

A rating is a star score from 1 to 5. A review is a rating with written text. DataHawk collects the ratings side: the average rating, how many ratings a product has, and how they split across star levels. It doesn't collect review text.

What DataHawk collects

For each product, DataHawk records a daily snapshot of:

  • Average rating: the star score shown on the product page, like 4.6 stars.
  • Number of ratings: the total count, written reviews included.
  • Star-rating breakdown: how the ratings split across 1 to 5 stars.
  • Average rating and number of ratings: yes, daily.
  • Star-rating breakdown: yes, as the share of ratings at each star level (for example, 64% five-star). It's often missing on recent days: see Known gap.
  • Review text: no. Amazon doesn't make review text available to DataHawk.
  • Average rating and number of ratings: yes, daily.
  • Star-rating breakdown: yes, as the number of ratings at each star level. For example, a product with 4.8 stars and 2,573 ratings might have 2,266 five-star, 195 four-star, 50 three-star, 16 two-star, and 46 one-star ratings.
  • Review text: not available yet. DataHawk doesn't collect review text, or the seller linked to each review.

Where to see ratings

Get alerted when ratings change

Alerts can watch four rating properties on Amazon and Walmart:

PropertyUses the breakdown?
RatingNo
Number of ratingsNo
% of critical (1–2 star) ratingsYes
% of positive (4–5 star) ratingsYes

The preset Changes in star ratings trigger fires when the share of 1- and 2-star ratings goes up. To catch a sudden wave of negative ratings, set up a custom alert. See how.

⚠️

The critical and positive rating alerts rely on the star-rating breakdown. On days the breakdown is missing for a product, these alerts have no data to compare for that product. Rating and number-of-ratings alerts aren't affected.

How to read the star-rating breakdown

What you seeWhat it means
Breakdown filled inDataHawk captured the breakdown that day.
Ratings, but no breakdownThe product has ratings, but DataHawk didn't capture the breakdown that day. It doesn't mean 0%.
No rating, no ratings count, no breakdownNo rating data that day, for example because the product was unavailable.
💡

A product with ratings can't have 0% at every star level. So when a product has ratings but every star level shows 0, DataHawk treats the breakdown as missing and shows it as empty (NULL), not 0. A single 0 is still real: a product can have 0% one-star ratings, for example. DataHawk only does this when all five star levels are 0 at once.

Known gap: missing breakdowns on Amazon

Known gap (as of October 2026): on many days, DataHawk captures a product's average rating and number of ratings but not its star-rating breakdown. Those days show no breakdown. DataHawk is improving how it captures it. The improvement applies to new days only, so days already missed won't be filled in. See the incident note for the history of this issue.

FAQ

For analysts: rating columns

The star-rating breakdown is only in PRODUCT.PRODUCT_DETAILED, in the RATING_1_STARS_PERCENT to RATING_5_STARS_PERCENT columns. The average rating (RATING) and number of ratings (RATING_COUNT) also appear in most product, category, and keyword tables. To find every table that has them, search for these column names in the schema reference. See how.

When RATING_COUNT is above 0 and all five percentage columns are 0, the five columns return NULL. When you build checks on the breakdown (for example, a daily 1-star change), filter out rows where the percentage columns are NULL.
